The Pioneer Woman
Here's a delicious reader-submitted recipe, from our friends Greg and Nick Balleza. The brothers took this originally southern (possibly Texan) recipe and modified it over the years. It's cheap (under $10 for ingredients, $15 with ice cream/whip cream), easy to make and a crowd pleaser.
Ingredients:
1 baking pan (usually disposable aluminum)
1 can of crushed pineapple
1 can of cherry pie filling
1 box of yellow cake mix
1 and 1/2 stick of butter
nuts (optional)
Instructions:
Evenly spread all the crushed pineapple at the bottom of the pan.
Then evenly spread/layer cherry pie filling on top of the pineapple (do not stir the two together)
Put the cake mix in a bowl
Melt the 1/2 stick of butter and mix with cake mix until it gets crumbly
Spread cake mix evenly on top of the pineapple/cherry in pan. Do not mix the cake mix with the fruit, just put it on top of the fruit.
Cut the 1 stick of butter into slices and place the slices evenly on top of the cake mix, evenly spaced.
Sprinkle nuts on top if you wish
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and bake dump cake in oven on middle rack for 30-35 minutes or until top is golden brown (due to varying strengths of ovens, check around 25 minutes). Take out and let cool for an hour. Serve with ice cream or whipped cream.
Greg suggests experimenting with strawberry and blueberry filling, too. Mix it up and let us know how it goes!
